In this captivating episode of DDLT, Diva Doc sits down with Franka-Maria Andoh—mother, writer, author, and foodpreneur—to dive into her incredible journey of running a family restaurant for over 25 years.
Born in Accra, Ghana, Franka draws inspiration from her roots, with many of her stories set in her home country. She holds a degree in Communications from Croydon Business School and is the proud owner of Cuppa Cappuccino, a beloved coffee shop in the heart of Accra.
In 2009, Franka was nominated for the prestigious Caine Prize for African Literature during the renowned Caine African Writer’s Workshop in Ghana, guided by the acclaimed author Aminatta Forna. During this workshop, she penned her first narrative, “Mansa,” which is featured in the anthology “Work in Progress and Other Stories.”
Franka is a passionate advocate for reshaping the African narrative. Her writing journey began when she struggled to find literature that celebrated her daughter, prompting her to create characters that reflect the lives of Ghanaian children. This inspiration led to her two delightful children’s stories: “Dokono the Donkey” and “Koku the Cockerel.”
In 2014, she received a grant from the Danish-Ghana Culture Fund to publish her collection of short stories, *I Have Time and Other Short Stories*.
Cuppa Cappuccino has been a warm and inviting haven in Accra for over 25 years. What began as a simple desire for a cozy tea spot has blossomed into a celebrated café, renowned as a cornerstone of community and connection across Africa.
